.

of the California Gulch Superfund Site, and has participated regularly in
related sampling activities

Navajo Nation, Navajo Indian Health Service (partnership with UNM,
Mesa State and others). Risk to human health and the environment as a
result of past uranium mining and milling practices has largely been
ignored when considering the Navajo Nation people. People of this
culture have for decades, served the purpose of providing mining labor to
areas of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona. Many Chapters within
the Nation co-exist with the residual waste areas of these mining
practices. It has become apparent that the exposure of the mining waste
to these people may have adversely affected their health as noted with
increasing incidences within tumor registries etc. A team of scientists has
assembled in order to determine the causative agents, the routes of
exposure, the sources of contamination and the possible mechanisms for
source control of this issue. The NRM will provide the technical expertise
required to evaluate the environmental pathway component of the study.
We will determine the fate and transport of mining contaminants within
food pathways and other environmental components. Our task specifically
was to assist the Navajo Nation in their pursuit of determining the
ecological risk attributable to these past practices and overlaps that
information with the human health assessment.

.

American Refinery Group - Wetlands Evaluation: The NRM was
responsible for the assessment of past refinery waste disposal practice
impacts to wetlands ecosystems within the Bradford Refinery Site property
boundaries. Results were used for an evaluation of ecological risk.

National Park Service - Great Sand Dunes Watershed Water Quality:
Annually, the CMC NRM conducts a watershed scale water quality
investigation for the Great Sand Dunes National Park. The information is
compiled into their annual water quality inventory reports. NRM has also
conducted migratory bird species inventories for the Blanca Wetlands
Wildlife Preserve.

LCOSI Archaeological Inventory: NRM students performed an
archeological survey for the Lake County Open Space Initiative. The
Hayden Meadows area, once a habitat for Ute Indians was surveyed to
determine preservation status before the deciding the final location of the
proposed reservoir.

.

LCOSI Wetlands Inventory: NRM is conducting a transect survey of the
LCOSI property to identify the lateral width of riparian corridor wetlands,
and their plant and soils composition. This service is being provided
through a paid scholarship program through the NRM.
