<br />in Riverside, California. If this equipment and instrumentation becomes available, it will be demonstrated on <br />these sites. Salinity mapping can still be done using instrumentation developed at Riverside but will be done <br />on foot rather than by mobile units. <br /> <br />Surge Irrigation: Surge irrigation is a relatively new irrigation technology that is now being recognized as a <br />usable practice in the Arkansas River area. This study will allow area irrigators to observe the effectiveness of <br />surge irrigation as an improved irrigation Best Management Practice under local soil, water and environmental <br />conditions. <br /> <br />Renovation and monitoring of drainage systems: Tile drain installation and drainage ditch renovation has <br />been done but there has been limited monitoring of the effect. This feature of the project will observe and <br />quantify the effect on water table levels, crop yields and returns. <br /> <br />A final innovative feature of this project is the combined use of B.MPs to reduce nitrate and salt loading on the <br />soil and in the runoff water and ground water. Salt tolerant crops combined with more efficient irrigation <br />technology can reduce the amount of salt loading, pickup and leaching. This project will demonstrate methods <br />of achieving this while maintaining economic viability. This will make available to producers a complete <br />package of management practices concerning improved crop types and yields, irrigation practices, water quality <br />concerns and economic returns under saline soil and/ or water conditions. <br /> <br />VII.
