Valliant <br /> <br />Jim Valliant is Regional Extension Irrigation Specialist and Research Scientist for Colorado <br />State University serving eighteen counties in southeast Colorado. Jim was raised in the arid <br />west Texas town of Pecos and received his B.S. and M.S. in Agricultural Engineering from <br />Texas Tech University. He spent 16 years at the High Plains Research Foundation near <br />Plainview, Texas working on soil and water conservation, irrigation and artificial <br />groundwater recharge. Jim served as project farm manager for the Navajo Irrigation Project <br />with 22,000 irrigated acres including 4,000 acres of alfalfa, He was farm manager for <br />Foxley Cattle Company in Crowley County, Colorado for eight years directly managing <br />6,000 irrigated acres with 2,200.acres in alfalfa while barley, com, sorghum and wheat were <br />planted on the remaining acreage. He also directed the leasing of 6,000 irrigated acres. Jim <br />was with Anderson Seed of Lamar as Ag Division Manager emphasizing alfalfa, corn, small <br />grain and sorghum sales, He joined Colorado State University Cooperative Extension and <br />Agriculture Research Stations in January of 1991. Jim devotes a major portion of his time to <br />water quality improvements through Best Management Practices such as surge irrigation, <br />trash screens,polyacrylamides and water quality monitoring. He started the Arkansas River <br />Basin Water Forum which is held annually to bring all water users together to discuss <br />problems and opportunities, He also organized the Arkansas River Basin Technical Group <br />which meets quarterly to work on specific problems and to update information on the work <br />of the different member organizations. <br /> <br />September 1997 <br /> <br />15 <br />
