e

1) With the exception of a handful of people, La Junta was not
knowledgeable of xeriscape.

2) Xeriscape is expensive initially, but can conserve water and reduce
maintenance.

3) Xeriscaping can be done without changing vegetation, but rather
through changing practices of care and watering of plants and grasses.

4) The public will accept xeriscaping practices but slowly and through
continued promotion.

5) Xeriscaping is fun.

e

In conclusion, the City of La Junta constructed a unique xeriscapre garden in a
region unfamiliar with the concept of xeriscape. The garden covers a larger area
than most, if not all, existing xeriscape demonstration parks in Colorado. It is
freely available to the public at all times and is not part of landscaping for a
building. The project as designed would have cost nearly four times as much as
was actually spent, but, by modifying the design through almost daily
surveillance, the garden was completed in a manner attractive both aesthetically
and economically. Before the project began, no more than a handful of people in
La Junta had even heard the term xeriscape. Now hundreds of people in this area
know of xeriscape and are interested in applying its concepts to both public and
private landscaping.

FINANCIAL SUMMARY

GRANT FUNDS OTHER FUNDS TOTAL
AND/OR IN-KIND
DONATIONS
Professional
services 319.50 319.50
Construction 17,736.93 14,014.20 31,751.13
Equipment or
devices 4,808.81 4,808.81
Installation 2,461.20 2,461.20
Planning and
design 2,219.09 2,686.80 4,905.89
Miscellaneous 113.36 113.36
GRAND TOTAL $24,878.19 $19,481.70 $44,359.89

-
