e'

e

@
10. BE A WATER~LEAK
DETECTIVE

Take A Guess..
If a leaky faucet fills a coffee cup in 10 minutes, how much
water wiU it waste in a year? Enough far:
A) A glass of water B)A bath C) 52 baths

Calling all kids!
Calling all kids!
Be on the lookout
for hidden water leaks in
your house. Secret hiding
places include: behind the
walls, in faucets, in toi~
lets.. .and even outside at
the end of a hose.
Your mission as a wa~
ter-leak detective is to
find the hidden leaks...
and help to stop them!

Did You Know
· Even a tiny leak can waste a lot of water. For example. a
leak that fills up a coffee cup in 10 minutes will waste over
3,000 gallons of water in a year.
· How much water is that? You'd have to drink 65 glasses of
water every day for a year to get that much water!
· 20% of all the toilets in American homes are leaking right
now....And usually people don't even know it.
· In one year, a leaky toilet can waste over 22,000 gallons
of water. That's enough to take three baths every day!

42
Answer: C. Enough to take 52 baths...one for every week of the year.

I
.l
r

r
!
!

@

e

What You Can Do
Be a Water~Leak Detective. Here's how:
· First, get your parent to teach you how to read the wa-
ter meter. If you have one, it will probably be in the comer
of your basement, on the outside wall of your house, or
next to the street, under a cement or metal cover.
· Then pick a time when everyone is going to be out of the
house, and no one will be using the water-when the
whole family is about to go out shopping or to a movie, for
example.
· Before you leave, read the water meter and write down
its setting. Then when you get back home, take another
reading. If the numbers have changed, you've probably dis~
covered a leak! Tell your par~
ents what you've found.

Another way to be a leak
detective: Check your toilet.
· Get an adult to take the top
off the toilet tank in your
home. Then put about 12
drops of red or blue food col~
oring in the tank.
· Wait about 15 minutes.
Guard the toilet, so no one
uses it while you're waiting.
That's important.
· Now look in the toilet. If
colored water shows up in the
bowl, you've found a leak!

43
