e.

e

@
17. ADOPT ~A. STREAM

Take A Guess.
Which of these would you probably find. in a stream?
A) Fish B) Old tires C) Pebbles

Streams and creeks are great places to play. They're fun
to explore, wade in, skip rocks in....They're even fun to
listen to. And if you stay very quiet awhile, you may see
some birds or other animals-because they depend on
streams, too.
Unfortunately, lots of streams have become polluted or
filled with garbage. Someone needs to help make them clean
again. How about it? You and your friends can help take care
of the Eanh by adopting a stream in your area.

56
Answer: You'd fiDd all of them. Fish and pebbles belong in streams. but old tires don't!

@

e

· A shiny film on the water: Can mean there's oil leaking
into the stream. That's poison and should be stopped.
· Foam or suds in the water: Can mean soap from homes
or factories is leaking in.
. Rotten egg smell: Bad news! Sewage could be leaking
into the stream! Sewage carries germs that can make us
very sick, and kill water life.
· Orange or red coating on the water: Might mean a fac-
tory is dumping pollutants into the stream.
· If you find fish, or lots of bugs, in the water, that's a good
sign. It means there's lots of oxygen there.

What You Can Do
. Patrol the stream bank and pick up all the trash you can
find. Make sure you put the trash in a trash can, or bring a
garbage bag with you and take it back to your house to
throwaway.
. Try not to let your pet leave its waste in or near a stream.
Animal waste can pollute the water in a stream.
. Organize a party to plant trees along stream banks. This
will keep the soil from washing away into the stream and
protect animals that live in the stream as well.
· If you find anything like oil or sewage leaking into the
water, report it to a parent or other adult.

See For Yourself
Send for their free Save Our Streams booklet and other
information, write to:
The Izaak Walron League of America
1401 Wilson Blvd., Level B
Arlington, VA 22209

57
