We are planning to tap them for
imaginative ideas for demonstrating important water principles.

4. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
The focus group has shown an amazing amount of energy, creativity and enthusiasm for this
project. Participants include representatives from the Discovery Center board and staff, the
Water Utilities, Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District, Colorado State University,
Colorado Division of Wildlife and other interested professionals. Additional volunteers will
also be sought to aid in design and construction ofthe exhibits.

5. SHARING RESULTS
The results of this project will be available to anyone visiting the Discovery Center. When
complete, the new rooms will be featured in the local newspaper.

6. BENEFITS
The Water Utilities has an active youth education program, providing speakers and hands-on
presentations to classrooms in the Poudre R-l School District and private schools. In 1995,
130 water presentations were given to 1,232 students. When the exhibits are completed,
Water Utilities staff will have the opportunity to move some of the presentations to the
Discovery Center. The Discovery Center has an auditorium that seats 45 to 60 people with
additional seating on the floor. Thus, the Water Utilities will be able to reach students who
attend the museum on a field trip and eliminate some of the classroom visits. This would
make learning about water more exciting for the students, as well as convenient for Water
Utilities staff and teachers.

7. PARTICIPANTS
The City of Fort Collins Water Utilities and the Discovery Center Science Museum are the
two main agencies implementing this project. The focus group members are involved in the
planning and design efforts.

8. TIME LINE
Projected dates for project implementation:
October 1996 - April 1997 Planning
May 1997 - July 1997 Exhibit design
August 1997 - September 1997 Room remodeling
October - July 1998 Exhibit construction
