<br />Evergreen Garden Club working to brighten up daDl area <br /> <br />, \ <br /> <br />by Monica L. Casillas <br />Reporter <br />The journey starts by the Evergreen Lake <br />House on a Sunday morning. One can walk or <br />bike down the trail along Evergreen Lake as it <br />winds down the mountain, heading towards <br />the dam. And the perfect rest spot- the plaza. <br />a unique flagstone patio. where one can sit and <br />enjoy the' newest garden of trees, shrubs, <br />herbs, flowers and grasses courtesy of the <br />Evergreen Garden Club. <br />The Garden Club, a nonprofit organization. <br />is currently working on a gardening and land- <br />scaping project below the dam, The garden <br />club will plant shrubs and !lowers today and <br />tomorrow. July 26 and 27 starting around 9:30 <br />a,m. to 12:30 p.m. and plans to finish the <br />initial planting July 2 and 3. The goal is fort he <br />first initial planting to be done by the Fourth <br />of July. <br />The Evergreen Metro Water District asked <br />the Garden Club to plant a garden in this <br />particular area and offered to pay for the <br />landscaping which includes the rock patio and <br />paths. Since the Garden Club is an organiza- <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />tion whose mission is to be a charitable and <br />educational organization interested in moun- <br />tain horticulture and the conservation of natu- <br />ralresources. they decided to plan the garden <br />. .0"""" <br />for the community; m~king it a public garden. <br />"It is an ideal spot and will be an educational <br />opportunity for the community and we can <br />have a beautiful garden in the mountains," <br />past president Joa~ Reynolds said. <br />The planting committee has done a lot of <br />planning for the garden in hopes that it will be <br />both a beautiful rest area and an educational <br />place for the community. In fact, specific <br />"architecture" type plans were drawn out by <br />Dale and Peggy Fetchenhier, coordinators of <br />design for the project. <br />"It will be a wonderful place for the com- <br />munity to gather." Peggy said. <br />According to the Fetchenhiers, all the plants <br />and greens have been cho,sen for their low <br />water usage and for an altitude above 7,500 <br />feet. The plans have also included careful soil <br />preparation for all the plants, trees and flow- <br />, ers in order for the xerisc"aping and low water <br />usage. to work correctly. After everything is <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />,",: <br /> <br />WE WANT THE GARDEN TO BE <br />AS USER FRIENDL Y AS <br />POSSIBLE, WE WANT <br />CHILDREN HERE AND PEOPLE <br />TO USE IT. <br />Peggy Fetchenhiers <br /> <br />planted, there wi II be a layer of bark put over <br />the soil in order to hold in the moisture, <br />The entire plan is designed to be an educa- <br />tional experience for the community to see <br />what will grow with low water usage in this <br />altitude ami will give people a cross-section <br />of plants they can grow in the mountains <br />successfully, therefore. all the plants will be <br />marked and labeled, <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />"We want the garden to be as user friendly <br />as possible, we wanl children here and people <br />to use it," Peggy said. <br />The Denver Water Department donated all <br />the signs and labels for most of the plants and <br />have offered much advice' in the building of <br />this xeriscape garden, <br />There hil-s been intricate plans drawn out for <br />the layou-t of the garden and all of its inhabit- <br />ants. There will be a perennial garden along <br />the pathway and opposite this will be a rock <br />. garden with smaller plants so the view from <br />Highway 73 will not be obstructed, Behind <br />the plaza area, made of sheet rock, is the home <br />of four trees. a Russian Hawthorn, Dolga <br />Crab. Colorado Spruce and Ginnala Maple <br />which are all xeric plants- requiring very little <br />water. <br />There will also be an herb garden along the <br />plaza area which long-time garden club mem- <br />ber Louise Mounsey has been working hard to <br />plan, <br />"It has been a year in planting alone.
