The number of aircraft used varied
from year to year (and occasionally from month to month), and the base of operations for each
project aircraft also varied from year to year. The dispersal of seeding aircraft was intended to
minimize the time required for at least one aircraft to reach seedable clouds, wherever they occurred
in the target area. Table 2.2 indicates the base airports for each year; the locations of these bases
are shown in figure 2.1.

Each seeding aircraft had its own seeding log. The logs included the aircraft identifier,
specification of the seeding track for each mission, the time at points along the track, the type of
seeding material, the amount of material released, the type of clouds present, and the purpose of
that seeding mission (rain increase, hail suppression, or both). Some of the logs were more
descriptive than others; some were more detailed. The seeding track was usually described by
bearing and distance from a particular airport. The track was often sketched on a map as well.
Occasionally, the map provided more detail, but the time and the amount of seeding material
released were related to the bearing and range. The logs for July 1978 were missing. Seeding in
1980 was reported by county only.

Table 2.3 is a summary of project operations statistics for the 11 seed years (1975-85 inclusive)
used in this study. It shows, for each year, the operating season, the maximum number of
cloud-base and cloud-top aircraft available, the number of days on which seeding occurred
anywhere in the target area, the number of individual aircraft seeding missions, the sum of the
hours of seeding by all project aircraft, and the total amount of silver iodide and dry ice released.

.

...

x
x

5
