With a few caveats, the U.S.
Bureau of Reclamation's plan to
make flows from 'Navajo ,Dam
mimic natural patterns received
mostly support from, those who
attended.a public meeting on the
proposal Thursday in Durango. t
Following a seven-year studyini-
tiated when biologists' 'found evi-
dence . of "pwdnction b( endan- 'i
gered fish' species below the dam, i 1
the bureau introduced two alterna-
tives to thecurient' release rates,
"Right now, w; don\ even have
the capability to release 6,000 from
the facility," Beck said., He said that
the alternative would allow, for
more w,ater development, includ-
ing the Animas-La Plata 'Proje~t,
sou~ of Durango, in the San Juan
Basm - one of the two goals' of the "
proje~t. known as ,the :San Juan, ,
Recovery Implementation Pro~,' ,
(Sanjuan RlP)~ ' " ;
The 'other goal- to recover po?-';
ulations of Colorado squawfish and:'
razorback sucker in the SanJuan:':':
received the most attention' 'at.
Thursday's meeting." , '
It ....'as discovery of those two fish
in the San Juan River in 1990 that
halted consuuction of the Animas-
La Plata Project south of Durango
just as the groundbreaking was
about to occur. '
The next year, the U.S. Fish and '
Wildlife Service issued an opinion
that the size ofA-LP, must be
reduced by two-thirds to help the
fish recover. Also coming out of the
decision was the formation of San
Juan RIP. . ,
On Thursday, Susan Kimbler,
holding a 5-foot-long papier mache
squawfish- now called the Col-
oradopikeminnow~'threw in her
support for the bureau's flow rec-
ommendations. '
"It cannot speak for itself. It can-
not say, 'This is what I want,' but I '
believe the biologists have done ,
that, ", Kimbler said. "I am in favor '
of the flow recommendations (that
will) maintain a, habitat so that
these fish can liv~." '
David Wegner, a Durango biolo-
gist, agreed but said that the project
needs to be monitored to ensure
. See NAVAJO, Page 1,2A'
