OJ1736

In certain cases, unmeasured canal losses are distributed by river mile as in the case of the missed
canal measurement on Citizen Ditch at mile 209,10.

The mass balance on the river reach calculated the downstream reach flow by using the upstream
reach measured flow, diversions, irrigation return tlow, wasteway flow, M&I return flow, and
any tributary inflow, and calculated canal loss, Table 6 shows the calculations for the river
balance, It shows the order of diversions and return flows to the river in relation to the river
station by station number, river mile and description. It displays the values for diversions, return
flows and river losses and the resultant calculated river flow versus the measured river flow.
Lastly, it shows the estimated effect of releasing 250 cfs from Navajo Reservoir. River stations
values are displayed along with diversions, return flows and river losses in the analysis column
and the river flow at each diversion or return flow point are displayed in the Streamflow by River
Mile column.

Flows at the 9 river stations were calculated for the 250 cfs Navajo Reservoir release scenario by
substituting 250 cfs for the averaged measured 272 cfs that occurred at the USGS Archuleta gage
during the field test. All diversions, uses, losses and gains were assumed to be unchanged. The
only exception is for Citizen Ditch, The measured diversion for this ditch waS about 142 cfs.
This is apparently about 18 cfs less than their water right. It was assumed that the headgate
inflow would be increased from the measured 142 cfs to about 160 cfs. The canal was operating
at or near its maximum capacity at Station 16-Citizen Ditch behind Blanco Church during the
field test. Therefore, it was assumed wasteway 32 would return an additional 18,1 cfs to the river
below the Hammond Diversion. In any case, the flows (recorded during the test) in the reach of
river below Citizen Ditch Intake Diversion (mile 217.75) and some where below Hammond
Diversion could be reduced as much as about 40 cfs.

3
