001702

information gained during operations and subsequent inspections.
Detailed records of flowrates and the time the penstock and tie-rods
were exposed should be kept for the inspection

Yearly for flows less than 1600 c.f.s.
G" Perform interior inspection early enough before spring startup to
effect repairs if necessary.

5 days of operation of the City of Farmington Power Plant operated at
full power in conjunction with flows of 2300 c.f.s. or greater through
the Main Outlet Works.
6' The 5 day requirement should be expected to change with
information gained during operations and subsequent inspections.
Detailed records of flowrates and the time the penstock and tie-rods
were exposed should be kept for the inspection

The tunnel and exterior of the penstock should be inspected every
two days for flows greater than 3200 c. f .s.
G" The 2 day requirement should be expected to change with
information gained during operations and subsequent inspections.
Detailed records of flowrates and the time the penstock and tie-rods
were exposed should be kept for the inspection

. Inspection requires closure and lockout of 6-foot by 13-foot gate and
draining of the penstock.

.. Inspection for interior damage to the Penstock:
G" If damaged, plans should be made for immediate repair.
Cavitation will "jump" downstream and will multiply it's damage
rapidly.
.. Manhole design is probably not adequate for flows above 2500 c.f.s.
Cavitation could occur downstream on pipe wall.
.. Bifurcations should be inspected for damage at upstream springline of
exiting pipe. The 3D-inch line is most susceptible, with the City of
Farmington line the next most susceptible.
.. Inspect for tie rod integrity by using dye penetrant testing according to
A.S.T.M. E165.
.. Coating damage (stripping) will occur at problem areas first. If no damage is
noted, the time of operation should be doubled at the high flow and a
reinspection performed. If an operating time of one month is reached
without any noticeable damage, the inspection should be performed on a
yearly basis. Always inspect the coating for damage resulting from
upstream failures such as concrete or trashrack failures.
