Wirth (801) 524-5403
For Release: March 15, 1991

News Release

Upper Colorado Region

PUBLIC MEETINGS ON GLEN CANYON DAM EIS
SET FOR ARIZONA AND UTAH LOCATIONS

Public meetings to discuss the preliminary alternatives being considered under the Glen

Canyon Dam Environmental Impact Statement (GCD-EIS) will take place in Arizona and Utah

the first week of April. Representatives of the cooperating agencies charged with preparing

the GCD-EIS will be available to discuss the range of alternatives as they are now formulated.

These discussions will focus on descriptions of the alternatives and what they are intended

to do. The agencies will not be able to discuss the impacts of those alternatives. That level

of study is the next step in the process and will be displayed in the draft environmental impact

statement projected to be available in July 1992.

The meetings, announced in the March 15, 1991, Federal Register, are as follows:

April 1 ,1991,7 p.m., Hilton Hotel, 150 West 500 South, Salt lake City, Utah;

April 2, 1991,7 p.m., Little America Hotel, 2515 East Butler Avenue, Flagstaff,
Arizona;

April 4, 1991,7 p.m., YWCA leadership Development Center, 9440 North
25th Avenue, Phoenix, Arizona.

A written comment period will begin April 1, 1991, and conclude May 1, 1991.
Individuals do not have to attend a meeting in order to submit a comment. The comments
will assist the agencies in determining if the range of alternatives are sufficient for evaluation
in the Environmental Impact Statement.

Background materials outlining the proposed alternatives were mailed on March 15,
1991, to all individuals and organizations currently on the GCD-EIS mailing list. Interested
persons or groups may be added to that list and receive materials by writing the Colorado
River Studies Office, Bureau of Reclamation, P.O. Box 11568, Salt lake City, Utah 84147.
Materials can also be requested by phone by calling the same office at (801) 524-4099.
