The objectives of

the studies were: (1) to determine salt pick-up and (2) to

determine the relationship between water surface fluctuations

water going into or coming out of storage. The studies covered

the period 1963 through 1976.

The mass-balance approach was used in both studies. This is

an inaccurate approach. Contributing to the inherent inaccuracy

of this approach is that, in this case, tributary inflows of water

and salt between the four upstream gaging stations and Lees Ferry

had to be estimated. Consequently, estimated individual annual

values of salt pick-up and bank storage used in these studies may

include relatively large errors. However, because the Forum's

salt routing studies are based on average values, it is believed'

that the results can be used in the Forum's studies.

Salt Pick-Up

Salt pick-up was computed using annual data.
