<br />5 <br /> <br />The residual mass diagram indicates a cyclical relationship <br /> <br />with periods of above average salinity followed by periods of <br /> <br />o <br />W <br />..J <br />--.} <br /> <br />below average salinity. <br /> <br />The mass diagram ends with a period, <br /> <br />1970 through 1976, of below average salinity. This period, how- <br /> <br />ever, is too short to determine whether a significant change in <br /> <br />relationship has occurred and that this lower salinity trend <br /> <br />continue into the future. Therefore, until more data becomes <br /> <br />available, it should be assumed that salt-load versus flow rela- <br /> <br />tionship has not changed. <br /> <br />The Geological Survey has been conducting a study on the <br /> <br />effects of storing water in Flaming Gorge Reservoir since 1963. <br /> <br />The study indicates that salt pick-up in the reservoir may de- <br /> <br />crease with successive raising and lowering of the water surface. <br /> <br />However, because the reservoir's water surface has been mostly <br /> <br />rising since the inception of the study, sufficient information <br /> <br />is not yet available to project future trends. <br /> <br />San Juan River Near Bluff.
