Summary of Findings through May 31, 1986

Bear Creek Stream Survey

1. Effluent ammonia concentrstion from all w8stewster treatment plants has
been very lov except from Genesee WWIP. Becsuse of the low effluent
ammonia concentration, -k" rates can only be developed during periods of
cold water temperature and low stream flow, Table 1..

2. Total phosphorus from Evergreen, West Jefferson, Kittredge, Genesee and
Morrison is sveraging 3.9, 5.3, 7.6, 9.8, and 4.8 mg/l, respectively.
Ninety percent of the total phosphorus in the effluent is in the form of
ortho-phosphorus, Table 1.

3.

Totsl
above
gage.
Table

phosphorus concentration in Bear Creek increaaea from 0.09 mg/l
the Evergreen WWTP to 0.4 mg/l just west of Morrison at the U.S.G.S.
Total phoaphorua concentration in Turkey Creek averages 0.26 mg/l,
1.

4. The total phosphorus concentration below Bear Creek Reservoir is
approximately 40 percent leas than the concentrstion entering the
reservoir, Tsble 1.

5. There is an incresse in fecsl coliform concentration in Bear Creek through
Idledale; however, all observed values are much less than water quality
stsndards for primary contact recreation (Beat Creek is classified for
aecondary contact recreation), Table 1.

6. There is a net gain in streamflow in Besr Creek between Evergreen and
Morrison due to unmessured aurface and groundwater inflow. Unmeasured
inflow has rsnged between 4.4 and 9.5 cubic feet per aecond, Table 2.

7. The streamflow in Bear Creek at the Morrison gage, above the major
diversions is 4.4 to 43 times greater than the flow in Turkey Creek at the
inlet to the reservoir. Diversions from Bear Creek between the Morrison
gage and tbe inlet to the reservoir can significantly deplete streamflow,
Table 2.

8. On one occasion (5/7/86) Turkey Creek was used to convey storage flow (20
cfs) from Soda Lakes to the South Platte, Table 2.

51

_'__'p ."._ ._. - ...____._ ......_. .__~, _0_" ........,_.....~....
