<br />72 18,~@ETROPOLlTAN WATER DISTRICT <br /> <br />Construction of the San Gabriel Canyon crossing was begnn in <br />May 1937. At the time of the Februar~'-March 1938 storm, when <br />a peak of 67,000 cubic feet per second of flood run-off passed Morris <br />dam, the pipe line across the bottom of the canyon and the access <br />structure had been completed and the valve structure started. <br />Little damage was done to the works in the schedule, but the con- <br />tractor's plant and equipment and some District furnished material <br />were washed away or buried in the debris, and the road to the work <br />destroyed. A new road was built, some equipment and materials <br />were recovered, and work was resumed in August, The schedule -~ <br />was completed in November 1938. <br />The construction of the Eagle Rock Canyon crossing was not <br />started until April 1988, but then it progressed uniformly to com- <br />pletion in December. A\l clean-up aud testing of the three crossings <br />was finished and the work accepted on February 8, 1939. <br />Cost and other data on both precast concrete pipe lines and <br />cast-in-place concrete pipe lines are given in table 18, <br /> <br />San Gabriel Spillway <br />A spillway, located about 600 feet below Morris dam, provides <br />an emergency discharge outlet, or pressure relief, in case of sudden <br />stoppage of flow i/1 the upper feeder west of San Gabriel Canyon. <br />It consists of a 10-foot diameter circular tunnel, 112 feet long, <br />extending up at an angle of 20 degrees from Monrovia No.2 tunnel <br />to the spillway chamber built into the side of the canyon. The <br />upper feeder, for which Monrovia No.2 tunnel makes a connection <br />to Morris reservoir, is a pressure conduit. The invert elevation <br />at the junction of Monrovia No.2 and the spillway tunnel is 971.94, <br />whereas, hydraulic grade at this point, under normal full flow <br />conditions, is elevation 1,036.1. The spillway lip is at elevation <br />1,037.5. <br />A contract for construction of the spillway was awarded to the <br />J. F. Shea Co., Inc., of Los Angeles, November 4, 1938 and work <br />was started at the site on Feuruary 7, 1939. Excavatiun was finished <br />early in April, followed by concrete work and grouting, the entire <br />spillway being completed on June 30, 1939. The total cost on June <br />30,1940, including District items, Was $31,618,1<\, <br /> <br />Steel Pipe lAnes <br />The steel pipe lines built for the distribution system, during the <br />period under review, consisted of the Eagle Rock to Palos Verdes <br />feeder, with a short connection to the Ascot reservoir of the Los <br />
