ABDIAS-LA PLATA ~lJBCT-COLO~ ARD NEW un<i0 Introduction The Animas-La Plata Project would be located in the Upper Colorado 1l1ver Basin in La Plata ADd Hontezuma Counties of southwestern Colorado and San Juan County of northwestern New Hez1co. The Congress authorized it as a participating project in the Colorado River Storage Project. . Project Objectives The project would be a IIII&ltiple-purpose water resource developaent. Hwlidpal aDd iDdustrial water would be furnished to Durango and to the rural La Plata area in Colorado and to Fara1ngton. Aztec. IlOOllfield and several smaller ('--''1'1 tie., as vell as the IIavajo Tribe in New Hez1co. The Southe1'1l Ute and Ute Mountain Ute 1udiu 'rribes would receive industrial water pdlllarily for the developlllent of coal resources on their reservation. the project would proVide water for the irrigation of Indiu and non-Incliu fa1'llland in the La Plata and Hancos 1l1ver drainagea, aDd opportunities would be ude for recreation at project reservoirs. A program for developing land for wildlife would compensate for wildlife losses at both reservoirs, and a program would be instituted to collect aDd preserve cultural resources.
