<br />.' <br /> <br />GROUND WATER SECTION <br /> <br />WESTERN RESOURCES CONFERENCE - 1960 <br /> <br />Steve McNichols, Governor of Colorado, initiated the ground <br />water study out of which grew the idea for the Ground Water Section. <br /> <br />The Ground Water Section of the Western Resources Conference <br />was made possible through the cooperation of Dr. Edward L. Clark, <br />Director, Colorado Department of Natural Resources; Felix L. Sparks, <br />Director, Colorado Water Conservation Board; George W. Colburn, <br />Engineer and Executive Secretary, Colorado Ground Water Commission; <br />Clyde S. Conover, Assistant Director, United States Geological Survey, <br />Ground Water Branch, Denver, Colorado; Wells A. Hutchins, Agricultural <br />Research Service, Department of Agriculture; and the participating states <br />and their agencies. <br /> <br />The Western Resources Conference ;s sponsored jointly by the <br />University of Colorado, Co'lorado State University, and Colorado School <br />of Mines. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />The Ground Water Section' was proposed by Colorado's consul tants <br />on ground water. Its purpose was to assemble the officials charged with <br />the adminislration of ground water programs in all states west of the <br />Mississippi in a cooperative effort to eXChange data on ground water <br />resources, their management and optimum use. Invitations to participate <br />were extended to tne official water agencies of eacn of the states, and repre- <br />sentatives of tne Ground Water Brancn of the United StatesGeo)ogicai <br />SUI'vey, and the Department of Agricul ture. <br /> <br />The proposal was accepted by the Western Resources Conference <br />on condition that the consultanta be responsible for the invitations, the <br />program, and the duplication of the papers presented. The cooperating <br />state and federal agencies assumed the expense of the attendance of their <br />representatives. <br /> <br />The State of Colorado expresses its appreciation to the Western <br />Resources Conference, its chairman, Dr. Morris E. Garnsey, and Alan Brown, <br />Director of the Bureau of Continuing Education of the University of <br />Colorado, who were hosts to the conference, the participating states, and <br />especially the speakers who prepared and presented the papers. The <br />experiences of the sister states will assist Colorado in achieving a more <br />workable ground water program.
