Main Reclamation Plots (Plots 1 - 96)

The general design and recllll1l8.tion treatments are shown on the diagram
on page 8. The amendments were applied in 1952 only. Twelve acre-inches
and 30 acre-inches of leaching water were applied in.l952. In 1954, an
additional 9 acre-inches of water were applied to the plots which original-
ly had received 12 acre-inches, making a total of 2l.acre-inches of water
applied fpr leaching purposes.

Lico barley, planted with Ranger alfalfa, was harvested in 1955. A
uniform application of 40 pounds per acre of nitrogen (N) and 300 pounds
per acre of phosphorus (P20t;') fertilizers was applied to the 'Plots before
they "ere seeded. No additional fertilizer was applied in 1956.

Two rates of surface irrigation were applied to both the drained and
.ub-irrigated plots in 1955. The west haJ.f of the drained plot area re-
ceived 11 irrigations (44 acre-inches) and the east half received 5 irri-
gations (20 acre-inches). The west half of the sub-irrigated area received
7 irrigations (28 acre-inches) and the east half received 4 irrigations (l6
acre-inches) .

All plots were irrigated 4 times (l6 acre-inches) prior to the first
cutting of alfalfa in the 1956 season.

The water-table level in the drained plots was at a depth of approxi-
mately lO feet during the 1955 season and thus far in 1956 has remained
at approximately the same depth. The water table level in the subbed plots
was approximately 5 feet in 1955 and during the 1956 season has remained
at this depth.

The first cutting of alfalfa in the 1956 season was harvested June
20-2l.

Alfalfa Strip Tests (S-l to 8-6)

The alfalfa strip tests were established in 1953. The amendment and
leaching treatments applied in 1953 are shown on the diagram on page 8.
Alfalfa strips S-l, 2, and 3 have received surface irrigation, as well as
sub-irrigation, early each spring and after each cutting of alfalfa. All
alfalfa strips were flooded late in the fall of 1953 and 1955.

The first cutting of alfalfa in the 1956 season was harvested June 22.

Grass and Legume Nursery (N-l to N-30; o-l to 0-20)

r.... :- (". i'~ -' r.,
.J '. h.-V-,- ,

The grass and legume nursery was established in 1954 to stud;v the
adaptability of various grasses and legum3s to the site conditions.
Tl.enty-four plots which had no stand or poor stands were reworked and re-
seeded in 1956. In some cases new varieties were seeded.

A uniform application of 50 pounds per acre of Nand l69 pounds per
acre of P20::; fertilizers was made at the time of original seeding in 1954.

-7-
