Of the 3.2 million acre feet now <br /> <br /> <br />capable of storage in all reservoirs, only 272,000, in Glendo <br /> <br /> <br />Reservoir,are for flood control. The remaining conservation <br /> <br /> <br />storage is for irrigation and power generation. Much of the <br /> <br /> <br />water stored in Wyoming as part of the North Platte Project system <br /> <br /> <br />is used for irrigation in Nebraska. <br /> <br /> <br />Reservoirs on the South Platte River are more numerous but <br /> <br /> <br />of smaller average size. Nineteen reservoirs store a total of <br /> <br /> <br />1.2 million acre feet, including 296,000 for flood control <br /> <br /> <br />capacity. Table 2-5 shows the major storage reservoirs within <br /> <br /> <br />the Platte Basin in Nebraska and provides information on their <br /> <br /> <br />location, capacities, and uses. <br /> <br />Flood Control Projects <br /> <br /> <br />Until the 1950's there were virtually no major flood <br /> <br /> <br />control projects in the basin. Large floods during the 1950's <br /> <br /> <br />and early 1960's renewed the desire for flood protection and <br /> <br /> <br />federal agencies--mainly the Corps of Engineers and the Soil Con- <br /> <br /> <br />servation Service--worked with local sponsors to achieve what <br /> <br /> <br />protection is provided at this time. Table 2-6 shows existing <br /> <br /> <br />major projects that provide flood control. <br /> <br /> <br />Some major projects not listed in table 2-6 provide in- <br /> <br /> <br />cidental reduction of flood damages even though they do not <br /> <br /> <br />reserve storage exclusively for flood control. ~herman Reservoir <br /> <br /> <br />in the Loup Subbasin and Lake McConaughy on the North platte <br /> <br /> <br />River near Ogallala are irrigation storage reservoirs which <br /> <br /> <br />provide incidental flood control. The effectiveness of control <br /> <br /> <br />on the North Platte River is illustrated by the channel capacity <br />
