communications

Nebraska and communities in the basin have a rather extensive

communications network provided by the Bell System and independent

telephone systems. The state has approximately 850,000 telephones

which provide service to nearly 96 percent of, the population.

.
Commercial broadcasting facilities provide a statewide network

for radio and television. In 1970 there were 14 television stations,

47 AM radio stations, and 15 FM radio stations. Public noncommercial

television is provided through a statewide network of stations.

There are 17 daily newspapers published in Nebraska with a

circulation of nearly 500,000. Four publish on Sunday. There are

117 weekly newspapers published in the Platte Basin.

Pipelines

The Platte River Basin contained about 12,600 miles of

natural gas pipeline in 1970. In addition, there were about 320

miles of pipeline used for crude oil and about 170 miles of pipe-

line used for other petroleum products.

Electric Power

The basin, like the rest of the State of Nebraska, is highly

dependent upon thermal rather than hydroelectric generation as

its source for electric power. Installed generating capacity

within the Platte River Basin was 814.4 megawatts at the end of

1970. From this the generation during 1970 was 3.1 million

megawatt-hours, 81 percent from thermal plants. At the end of

1970, there were 56 electric power generating plants in the basin--

2-28
