PUBLIC FACILITIES AND SERVICES

Public facilities and services have generally expanded to

keep pace with the demand in the basin.

Highway Systems
The Platte River Basin has about 52,670 miles of roads which

require about 430,000 acres of right-of-way. Municipal roads make

up about 5 percent of the total. This also includes about 330

miles of Interstate 80 highway. Percentages of the various types

or roads in the basin are given in table 2-4.

Tabl e 2-4
ROAD TYPE AND MILEAGE

'" Subbasin

T e
Unsurfaced Gravel Surfaced

________________Percent--------------

Mileage
---Mi 1 es---

Platte Basin

26
27
17
9
20

61
54
65
68
62

13
19
18
23
18

12,083
13,705

Elkhorn

Loup
Upper Platte
Lower Platte

19,025

7,857
52,670

Source: Nebraska Department of Roads, Nebraska Highway
Statistics: State and Local Construction Mileage
for 1971.

It is estimated that the land area in roads will remain

about constant in the future, though there will be an increase in

some areas due to widening to comply with federal standards.
