Trades and services provide work for many people in the
basin. Although the basin is not considered a manufacturing area,
there are many small plants producing a variety of items, particu-

larly for use in agricultural production.

Population and Education
There were 648,400 people in the basin in 1970. Table 2-2

shows the composition of the population in each subbasin. The

basin's population is greatest in the eastern portion, primarily

east of Grand Island. However, there is a corridor of concen-

trated population extending west from Grand Island along and

adjacent to the Platte River and Interstate 80, and a smaller

concentration in the North Platte valley around Scottsbluff.
Population density for the basin as a whole is about 16 persons

per square mile.

Table 2- 2
COMPOSITION OF 1970 BOPULATION

Subbasin Population Share Rural
Number
Elkhorn 143,400 22 36 37 27
LOUP 66,500 10 6 49 45
Upper Platte 209,100 32 58 23 19
Lower Platte 229,400 36 77 13 10
Platte Basin 648,400 100 55 25 20
Source: 1970 Census of Population.

2-20
