.', 00.26 ~ 0

State Advisory Committee

. ",',.
. ;:" -. - -. ~ <- , !;. .
'A'~eat~ Advisory Committee was formed to provide State needs

and desires to the Assistant Director; membership is shown in

figure 1-2. The Committee conducted a public attitude survey of

1,000 people early in the Study to help identify public preferences

and objectives for use in plan formulation.

The results of the survey indicate that Nebraska residents

in the Platte River Basin feel that economic problems such as

inflation and increased food costs far outweigh social, environ-

mental, or water resource concerns. A majority of those inter-

viewed do not expect most water resource problems to have an im-

portant impact on their personal lives. They also feel that the

population in general is affected only "somewhat" by water resource

problems. Consistent with the perception of the low priority given,

water resource problems, the majority of the residents interviewed

in all subbasins feel water related needs are being met "fairly

well" or "very well". They also rated Nebraska's water supply as

at least adequate.

While most residents interviewed prefer a rather constant

population level, they support some economic development especial-
ly of outdoor recreational opportunities and the establishment

of small industry. Furthermore, the respondents expressed the

attitude that provision of water for future development is im-
portant. Limited regulation of water withdrawal is supported.
The expressed opinion is that water resource planning should
be primarily a local function. Of the solutions presented to

reduce flood damages, reservoirs are preferred. The issue of

"transbasin diversion" did not evoke either a strong positive

1-11
