o
a
(...)
<:;:>
.....
N

2

The purpose of this study was to formulate an

operational plan for the irrigation features of John

Martin Reservoir that minimizes the water shortages of

the ditches in Colorado water District 67 and optimizes

its operation. This requires that the amounts of water

released just satisfy the requirements. including the

required deliveries to Kansas irrigators. with no

surplus. An equation is presented for use in the

operational plan that computes headgate diversion

requirements from mean air temperature and precipita-

tion data, and the equation allows the determination

of the release rates for irrigation purposes that are

required to satisfy the diversion requirements. The

adoption of this plan will reduce the crop damage that

results from water shortages and electrical power costs

that result from the use of irrigation wells to provide

supplemental water.

The determination of maximum release rates using

an equation that is based on air temperature and pre-

cipitation data is possibly too complex for practical

application so an alternative plan is presented that

is based on a maximum release rate for each month
