A manually operated diversion system may not be flexible enough to
efficiently capture the available daily peak flows. Efficiency as used here refers to the proportion
of flow captured. In order to assess the potential magnitude of this effect, hourly streamflow
data from the Gurley collection system area was collected and analyzed. The analysis was
intended to characterize the pattern, consistency and predictability of the diurnal streamflow
pattern during snowmelt runoff, and to assess the potential for efficient flow capture with
manually operated diversions.

Data Collection

Hourly streamflow data was obtained from archived USGS and State of Colorado Department
of Natural Resources recording strip charts. Average hourly gage heights for the melt seasons
of 1976, 1978, 1979 and 1980 were transcribed for three stations: Beaver Creek near Norwood
(09173000), West Beaver Creek near Norwood (09172800), and Gurley Ditch near Norwood
(09172700). Records for West Beaver Creek for 1977 are incomplete and of suspect quality
due to siltation at the gage and were not used. Consequently, data were not collected at the
other locations for this year. The locations of the three stations are indicated on Figure 1; Table
1 presents drainage areas, elevations and periods of record for each gage. Rating tables and
daily shifts were obtained from USGS records. Streamflow values were read from rating tables
and entered into computer files.

TABLE 1 - STREAM GAGES

Drainage Area
ISouare Miles)

Elevation
Ifeet)

Period of
Record

West Beaver Creek near Norwood
(09172800)

4.83

9750

1976-1980

Gurley Ditch near Norwood
(09172700)

32.31)

1975-1980

8340

Beaver Creek near Norwood
(09173000)

40.6

8010

1942-1981

1J Measured area above diversions to Gurley Ditch.
