.

.

-adult migration route (RM 0 - 109)- Taylor Draw Reservoir has
effectively reduced the range to RM 109
-juvenile concentration area (RM 0 - 59)

The Colorado River Fishes Recovery Team (FWS 1987b) has identified the White
River as one of the essential habitat areas that must be protected before the
Colorado squawfish should be considered eligible for delisting. The Colorado
River Fishes Recovery Team also recommended that additional research be
conducted to determine the importance of the reach of the White River above
Taylor Draw dam to the continued maintenance of the population in the Green
River. The Service plans to initiate a study to determine the desirability of
passing Colorado squawfish over Taylor Draw Dam and determining the importance
of the upper reaches of the White River to the Colorado squawfish.

Humoback Chub - Humpback chub are not residents of the White River-the capture
of only one individual has been reported in the literature (Sigler and Miller
1963).

Razorback Sucker - Razorback suckers are not frequent residents of the White
River. The only capture of a razorback from the White River was recorded by
the State of Utah in 1987.

Bonvtail Chub - No bony tail chub are known to occur in the White River and the
reach is not a priority reach as defined by the Biology Subcommittee.

2. Water Development Activities

White River Dam (State of Utah) - Proposed water for energy development
project at RM 50. No construction is planned or anticipated in the near
future. The Corp permit is scheduled to expire in December 1989. A no
jeopardy Biological Opinion was issued in 1982 with conservation measures to:
a) maintain minimum flows and suitable water temperatures; b) prevent
introduction of nonnative fishes; c) establish a squawfish sportfishery; and
d) evaluate the feasibility of fish passage.

3. Discussion

The primary factor that resulted in a Priority 2 ranking for the White River
(along with the IS-mile reach of the Colorado River) was the relatively large
numbers of adult and juvenile Colorado squawfish which occupy the White River
on a year-round basis, and the apparent importance of the White River to the
entire Green River population of Colorado sQuawfish. This factor was balanced
with the following considerations in assigning the final rank:
a. no Colorado squawfish spawning and recruitment has been documented in
the White River;
b. only Colorado squawfish inhabit the White River; razorbacks,
bony tail , and humpback do not utilize the reach;
c. no imminent development threats are evident; and
d. the White River Dam has been permitted and issued a no jeopardy
biological opinion. Construction of this dam could negate the need
to acquire water rights for the endangered fishes as minimum flows

6
