.

.

shows a section perpendicular to the river on the number 3 line of

observation wells in the upper well field. The figure shows interface

and water table levels as of August 7, 1980 with respect to the ground

surface and river channel.

The purpose of the project is to reduce salt pickup by the

Dolores River through Paradox Valley not just to show well field

effects of pumping. Figure 5 shows the average monthly salt pickup

over the past seven years, long with specific years 1979 and 1980 to

date. Salt pickup in 1980 during the major pump testing period is

significantly reduced from the past years. Hydrologic conditions

other than well field pumping may have effected the salt pickup, but

when comparing 1980 to 197~~ which were hydrologically similar, signi-

ficant salt pickup reduction is still evident. The 1980 salt pickup

data is preliminary until USGS flows and electroconductivities and

up-to-date water quality analysis is finalized. The data used in

Figure 5, year 1980, was worked up for comparison purposes only.

Using the pumping results to date, it appears that a pumping r,ate

of 2 cfs or less will signHicantly reduce the salt loading through
Paradox Valley. Conclusions made on the effects of the well field

pumping are based on only (,ne partial hydrologic year. At least

one complete hydrologic seEson should be studied to verify the

conclusions.

OC'O."Gt
