This first <br />attack upon the smaller water sources was followed by dil"ersion <br />of the ril"ers flowing into the Salt !""ke and other like bodies <br />_ of the Great Basin, In due course, settlements sprang up, and <br />cities came into being, each having as its chief support some <br />such supply of the refreshing fluid. 'i'his commonwealth is a <br />direct result of irrigation. Without ita civilized people <br />could not possibly exist in this region. <br /> <br />From that humble crigin proceeded the del"elopment of the <br /> <br />agricultural resources of the seventeen of the western states, <br /> <br />some ~9 ~greater, some to a lesser degree.
