8

encouraging the use of irrigation scheduling according to measure-
ments. While these programs have improved irrigation scheduling
and efficiency on many farms, it has not al~ays resulted in ~ater

savings. There has been a general trend to~ards over-irrigation

in the spring and fall but under-irrigation in the summer. Use of

improved techniques in scheduling irrigation, ho~ever, does re-

sult in more efficient use of ~ater from the crop production

stRndpoint.
While ~e in Oregon cannot say that we do not waste a single

drop of water, ~e do believe that the ~ater users of the state,

the executive and legislative leaders of the state, and the public

in general are cognizant of the need to conserve water. Research,

experimentation, and education are continuing and I am sure as
time goes on, Oregon's conservation practices ~ill continue to

improve.

-000-

DJL/Jc
SWRB
2/16/66
