<br />PURPOSE
<br />
<br />The project would serve as a mult~plc purpose
<br />water ~esource development. Municipal and
<br />industrial water would be furnished to the cities
<br />of Durango, Colorado; and Aztec, Bloomfield. and
<br />Fnrm1ng,t;on, New Mexico; to surrounding communl-
<br />t:i.Cl:l nnd the Navajo 111dlan TrIbo; .lUd to thQ
<br />Southern Ute and Ute Mountain Ute Indian Tribes
<br />for the develop~ent of their resources.

<br />The project would also provide irrigation water
<br />for land In the La Plgtn River drainage and for
<br />Borne land on the Ute Mountain Ute Indian Reser-
<br />vation in the Mancos River draInage. Opportu-
<br />nities would be made for recreational, develOp-
<br />ment and for fish and wildlife enhancement at
<br />project reservoirs. A cultural resources pro-
<br />gram would also be included to collect and pre-
<br />serve cultural resources.

<br />STATUS
<br />
<br />The Animas-La Plata Project was authorized for
<br />construction by the Colorado River Basin Act of
<br />September 30, 1968 (Public Law 90-537), as a
<br />participating project under the Colorado River
<br />Storage Project Act of April 11, 1956 (Puhlic
<br />Lnw 84-485). Project plunning hns been complct(J<.l.
<br />
<br />The final environmental statement was filed with
<br />the Environmental Protection Agency in July 1980,
<br />and the definite 1'1ao report was approved in
<br />August 1980.

<br />The main storage feature of the project would be
<br />Ridges Busin Reservoir, which would be located
<br />aifstream southwest of the city of Durango. The
<br />Durango Pumping Plant, south of the city, would
<br />pump Animas River water to Ridges Basin Reser-
<br />voir. Stored water '''Oil td be released as required
<br />huck to chu Anlm~l:i Hivcr Lor Aztec, BlQomf-rcld,
<br />Farmlngton, and the Navajo Indian Tribe. Durango
<br />and the surrounding area would obtain municipal
<br />and industrial water from Ridges Basin Reservoir.

<br />Ridges Basin Reservoir would also provide storage
<br />for the Ute Mountain Ute Indian Tribe's indus-
<br />tr~al and irrigation water and for irrigation of
<br />land 1n Colorado.
<br />
<br />Ridges Basin Pumping Plant, which would be located
<br />on the western edge of th~ reservoir, 'Would pump
<br />water into the Dry Side Canal, through Long Hollow
<br />Tunnel into the La Plata River drainage. The canal
<br />would provide water for Indian and non-Indian proj-
<br />ect land in Colorado and municipal and industrial
<br />water for rural Colorodo users and the Ute Hountain
<br />Ute Indian Tribe.

<br />Another storage feature~ Southern Ute Reservoir,
<br />would meet the municipal and industrial water
<br />requiroments of the Southern Ute. IndIan l'rih(~
<br />and the irrigation requirc:nents of project land
<br />in New Mexico. The reservoir would be located
<br />east of the La Plata River on the Colorado-New
<br />Mexico State line and t,'ould Store rivet flotvs,
<br />irrigation return flows, and water pumpod from
<br />Ridges Basin Reservoir to the Dry Side Canal
