I. Title of Proposal: ASPINALL STUDY--Quantification of available habitat in
the Gunnison River in relation to test flows released from the Aspinall
Unit.

II. Relationship to Recovery Program/Ranking Factors:

Determination of habitat and flow needs for rare fishes of the Colorado
River basin is key to the success of the Recovery Implementation Program.
Further, quantification of habitat versus flow relationships in the
Gunnison River will be critical to the biological opinion to be prepared
on operation of the Aspinall Unit. A remanent population of Colorado
squawfish is believed to exist in the Gunnison River upstream from the
Redlands Diversion Dam. Proposals exist to evaluate fish passage at the
Dam and to use the Gunnison River as a reintroduction site for razorback
sucker. Quantification of available habitats and identification of areas
that may lend themselves to habitat improvement projects are important
first steps in the proposed passage or reintroduction efforts.
