<br />VIETNAM REPORT - 1970
<br />
<br />In January of this year, in oonnection with my duties as a member
<br />of the Senate Armed Services Ccmnittee, I made my second visit to Vietnam.
<br />This particular trip was designed to give me an opportunity to oontrast,
<br />at first hand, the present situation with what I had found on my last
<br />trip to Vietnam in May of 1967. In order to get a realistic picture of
<br />heM the Vietnamization program was going, I spent most of my time <May
<br />fran Saigon and in the field. The trip included: a canplete helicopter
<br />tour of the Mekong Delta with stops at various villages, outposts, hamlets,
<br />and military bases, supporting the U.S. Navy Riverine forces; a day and
<br />an overnight visit with the ~'s 1st Division at Lai Khe, north of Sai-
<br />gon, including side trips to many of the outlying fire support bases; dis-
<br />cussions with the leaders of a consolidated M::mtagnard village near Pleiku
<br />in the Central Highlands; briefings fran Vietnamese military leaders in
<br />the II Corps area and U.S. ~ officials with the 4th Division located
<br />at Camp Enari; a survey of the Marine Corps activities in and around the
<br />Da Nang area; a brief inspection trip to the lrrq:Jerial City of Hue to ob-
<br />serve the re-building effort which has folleMed the TIT enemy offensive
<br />of 1968; and a special tour of a new refugee village built and paid for
<br />by the Vietnamese people.
