Miller Mesa waterfowl area is on the west
shore of the Navajo Reservoir just south of
the Colorado-New Mexico State line. A
small reservoir and two terrace ponds have
been completed and are full. About 170
acres of agricultural land have been planted
for wildl ife management purposes to barley,
oats, wheat, and alfalfa. Waterfowl use
patterns indicate that birds from other agri-
cultural and resting areas in the San Juan
Valley are using the Miller Mesa site with
increasing frequency.

Desert Lake waterfowl management area
comprises 2,480 acres of acquired and
public domain land in eastern Utah near
Huntington North Reservoir. Administered
by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources
since January 1968, the area's contribution
to waterfowl resources management was
significantiy increased by rehabilitation of

18

Fish and Wildlife

the historic Desert Lake dike and the com-
pletion of five additional diked areas below
the existing impoundment. These structures
are all filled and the lakes are used by
resident and game bird populations and
migrant waterfowl. During the past year, a
pipeline was completed to assure an ade-
quate water supply to the area.

Three projects have been completed to
mitigate fishery and big game losses caused
by the construction of CRSP features:

Curecanti Unit, Colorado-The Dome Lake
Reservoir, located southeast of Gunnison,
Colo., has been blanketed with heavy soil
material to prevent leakage. This will pro-
vide a stable fishing lake to mitigate fishery
losses above Blue Mesa Reservoir.

Emery County Project, Utah-Six small
lakes above Joes Valley Reservoir have
been stabilized to mitigate fishery losses at
the Emery County Project.

Starvation Reservoir, Central Utah Project,
Utah-The Bureau purchased 1,500 acres
of land near the Starvation Reservoir as part
of a joint effort with the State of Utah to
mitigate big game habitat losses in connec-
tion with the construction of Starvation
Reservoir. The State purchased a tract of
land of about equal acreage.

Fish shocking for biological resources
inventory, Upper Provo River.
