<br />CUREC~NTI STORAGE UNIT, COLORADO
<br />
<br />The Curecanti unit,Jocated in west central Colorado, is one of four
<br />authorized storage unry; of the Colorado River storage project. The
<br />project features inclU;de Blue Mesa, Morrow Point, and Crystal
<br />Dams, powerplants, a9.d switchyards, The primary purposes of the
<br />unit are regulation ana storage of floodf!ows of the Gunnison River
<br />and generation of hydfoelectric power, .
<br />Constr,!-ction. was u*d~rway at J.un~ 30, 1963, on two of the thre~
<br />dams whICh WIll comprrse the prmcIpal features of the CurecautI
<br />unit. Blue Mesa Datu and powerplant, the uppermost dam in the
<br />series, was 39 percent' complete. This earthfill dam will stand 340
<br />feet high and will reqjIire placement of 3 million cubic yards of fill,
<br />The powerplant will h!tve a capacity of 60,000-kilowatts,
<br />In May 1963 a $15,!l36,066 contract was awarded for construction
<br />of the Morrow Point :Qlam and powerplant, second dam in the series.
<br />This dam will .be a cQncrete arch-type structure approximately 465
<br />feet high and 720 feet long at the crest, The underground power-
<br />plant will house two g'enerators with a combined capacity of .120,000
<br />kilowatts, The contr'ltctor started work in June on access mads
<br />and construction office's at the site.
<br />In December 1962 d supplemental economic justification report on
<br />the Crystal Dam anq powerplant was approved by the Secretary
<br />arid certified to the pr;esident and the Congress that the benefits -will
<br />~ exceed the cost of theiCrystal segment of the Curecanti unit, Con-
<br />struction of this third, dam and powerplant may begin when funds
<br />are appropriated.: .
