.

Gno~
~vvl

Union Pacific Railroad Relocation

Before foundation preparations can be completed on the Narrovs
Dam in the vicinity of the river outlet conduits, the Union Pacific
Railroad must be relocated. The work must be accomplished without
interrupting service on the main Chicago-Denver line of the Union
Pacific System. Subject to negotiations with the railroad company,
it is planned to build 32.22 miles of new line around the north
side of the reservoir to replace 30.34 miles of existing railroad
along the north bank of the river. The proposed location of the
relocated railroad is shown on exhibit 2.

The railroad company's standards for new
in the feasibility layout and cost estimates.
and 133 pound rails are provided.

construction were used
Rolled embankments

.

The maximum degree of curvature of the new line is 00 - 30',
and the maximl~ gradient is limited to 0.30 percent. Data furnished
by the railroad provides for a drainage ditch with the bottom 3 feet
below the top of the subgrade. The ditch bottom was set at the
elevation of the crest of the dam--elevation 4453 at a point near the
left abutment where the railroad emerges from a deep cut into the
reservoir area. The railroad sub grade for the relocation at this
point would then be at elevation 4456 or 3 feet above the crest of
the dam. Where the railroad follows the north shore of the reser-
voir, the minimum subgrade elevation was held at elevation 4431.5,
three feet above the top of the flood control pool.

Typical sections furnished by the Union Pacific Railroad
Company are shown on exhibit 8. Betterments in the relocated line
due to meeting new construction standards will be adjusted during
negotiations with the railroad company. Adjustments for salvage
should also be made at that time.

Road Relocations

.

Four roads which cross the South Platte River in the reservoir
area will be abandoned. New river crossings will be provided at
the upstream end of the reservoir and at the downstream end of the
reservoir on the crest of the dam. These two crossings are part
of the required relocation of State Highway No. 144, vhich at
present crosses the river about one-half mile upstream from the
damsite; goes through the towns of Weldona, Goodrich and Orchard;
and crosses the river again about one-half mile south of Orchard.
The plan as shown on exhibit 2 is to relocate the highway along the
crest of Narrows Dam across the river, thence along the crest of
Riverside Dike, thence around the north side of the reservoir
paralleling the relocated Union Pacific Railroad to the river cross-
ing at the upper end of the reservoir, and thence south to a
junction with U. S. Highway No. 34 for a total of 26., miles.

23
