O~2~3S

(4) SnCM Avalanches

Impacts expected fran developnent of the ski area, especially
clearing of timber for ski runs, is to lengthen the runout of
avalanches. Situations in the proposed project area are such
that avalanches are not expected to reach the base area
primarily because of the decrease in slope near the botton of
the mountain. This is especially true for the east side of
Windy Pass where the slopes are very gentle belCM the
developnent area.

Most avalanche hazards may be avoided or minimized by giving
adequate attention to developing an avalanche control plan.
With the required control, iq:acts fran avalanches will be
minimal. without control, hCMever, on-mountain facilities
could be damaged.

c. Alternative Three

(I) potentiallv Unstahle Slopes and Rockfall

Based on slope and geology, the steeper slopes should be
regarded as potentially unstable but the risk of large
failures damaging structures and clogging channels is not as
great because the back bCMls would not be developed.

(2) Debris Flow

The most serious debris flCM hazard and recently active
land sliding occurs on the west side of Windy Pass so there is
little change in the potential for debris flow from
Alternative Two. Specific intensive mapping will be done for
the Master Developnent Plan.

(3) Avalanche

Again, with the required control to be specified in the
control plan during the Master Plan developnent stage, the
iq:acts from avalanches will be minimal.

2 . Scil..a

a. Alternative One

Table IV-l summarizes the acres of soil disturbance projected to
occur by alternative. As indicated 702 acres of private property
will be disturbed during the course of inplementing the rooM
Developnent Plan. This disturbance will be distributed over the
30 year developnent timeframe.

With the exception of the lower ski slopes on private land, the
developnent on private land will occur on soils with low or

155
