The sj'stem properly begins with a
main storage reservoir known as Lake Mathews, into which the
242-mile main aqueduct delivers Colorado River water liS required
to maintain ample reserve. Flow from this reservoir into the
upper feeder pipe line is regulated by an outlet tower and the
headworks.

PipE l.i-nes a.-ita. 1'e.sc'rvoirs

The upper feeder consisting of pl1'cast concrete pipe, steel pipe,
tunnels, and cast-in-place concrete canyon crossings extends 60.8
miles from Lake Mathews to the Eagle Rock control tower, on the
westerly boundary of the City of Pasadena. Its caplicity is 750
cubic feet per second to the San Dimas turnout lind 510 cubic feet
per second from that point to Eagle Rock. Near La Verne in Los
Angeles County, the flow of the upper feeder is diverted at a turn-
out structure into the water softening and filtration plant, softened
and filtered and returned to the upper feeder for distribution to
District areM. The City of Pasadena is supplied directly from the
Plisadena tunnel of the upper feeder through a riser pipe at Moun-
tain Street and Manzanita Avenue. This riser is connected to a
large city main which delivers water to nearby Sunset reservoir.
There are at present three main branches extending from points
on the upper feeder southerly and westerly into the metropolitan
area, with laterals as required to carry water to the member cities.
The Orange County branch takes off from the upper feeder at the
softening plant turnout structure and runs in a southerly direction
40.3 miles to connect with the existing Laguna Beach main supply
line near Corona del Mar. Direct connections are made from the
Orange County branch to the city systems of Fullerton, Anaheim,
and Santa Ana at points designated by these cities. Two reser-
voirs on this line provide storage and flow regulation.

[ 27 ]
