,"'. r, n
,~....J ..:..;

OPERATION AND MAINTEN,\NCE

17

firm Boulder energy for use in the metallurgical processes of Basic
Magnesium, Inc" during the operating year 1944-45, was reduced
from 1100 million kilowatthours to 921 million kilowatthours. The
179 million kilowatthours thus released, plus 250 million kilowatt-
hours additional unused energy released by the District, are to be
taken and paid for at the rate for firm energy by the Department
of Water and Power of the City of Los Angeles and the Southern
California Edison Company, Ltd. The remainder of the District's
allotment of firm energy amounting to 157,870,310 kilowatthouro
is reserved to supply the resale contracts of the Citizens' Utilities
Company' of Kingman, Arizona, and the California Pacific Utilities
Company of Needles, California, and for the District's own use in
pumping water in the Colorado River aqueduct. The District's
use during the 1944-45 year of operation is estimated at approxi-
mately 130,000,000 kilowatthours for delivering 40,000 acre feet
of water into Lake Mathews.

Delivery of power

While the District itself does not sell electric power, it is assist-
ing in t.he \-vartime power program and has representation on the
Pacific Southwest Power Interchange Committee, a voluntary or-
ganization of electric utilities cooperating with the War Produc-
tion Board in integrating the power resources of this southwestern
area. The District's 2.30-kv tran, mission line is the connecting
link between the Boul'der and Parker systems. Under three con-
tracts with the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation, the transmission
capacity of the District's line, in excess of the District's require-
ments, is available to the United States for (1) the interchange of
Boulder energy, within the District's allotment, with energy gen-
erated at hydro-electric plants of the United States on the Colorado
River below Boulder Dam (contract of May 29, 1941); (2) the
transmission of energy generated at Parker power plant to cu,-
tomer~ of the United States connected to the District's lines (con-
tract of May 9, 1942) ; and (3) the transmission from Boulder Dam
to Parker Dam of Boulder firm enerK\' III lotted to but unused by
the District and disposed of for the credit of the District (contract
of April 7, 1939). A fourth contract, dated December 1.3, 1~42,
grants the United States the right to use certain transformers and
other facilities of the District at Gene, Iron Mountain, Eagle
Mountain, aud Hayfield. for receiving and d,'livering energy for
use of the U. S. Army.

I

'J
