A dedicated group of extremists wants to drain lake Powell Sierra Club Board of Directors Votes to Drain the Lake I nNovember 1996, radicals within the Sierra Club engineered a vote by its Board of Direc- tors to drain Lake Powell. The prime sponsor of the measure was self-avowed "eeD-terrorist" David Foreman, founder of the radical Earth First! group, ~~=---=_._.- ~-:~=€F: S?=="'---- The resolution says: 'The Sierra Club sup- ports the draining of the reservoir behind Glen Canyon Dam." And, -believeitor not - it passed unanimously! (Notice that the radicals refuse to use the lake's actual name,) -- ::::.::-';:';;;..::.."=,,,::::::='::':::: -:;::..- ...._._~------ :::-=----- -::;--:-....------- =-==---- ~~:~--,=~ Serious Threat to the Lake At that time, many people dismissed the action as too ridiculous to be taken seriously. Newspapers, politicians, and everyday citizens alike said, "It's crazy. It will never happen!" Now those same people are beginning to have second thoughts because the Sierra Club and its radical friends are serious! Radical Groups Dedicated to Draining the Lake At least two new organizations dedicated exclusively to draining: the lake have been formed and are working to achieve their goal. These organizations include the Glen Canyon Institute, which is based in Flagstaff with a full time staff, and the Glen Canyon Action Network, also staffed and located in Utah. These organizations have millions of dollars at their disposal to do just one thing...promote draining Lake Powell. These groups are organizing conferences and other public meetings to try to garner support from the public. They held a rally in support of draining the lake on March 14, 2000. They are currently conducting studies as a part of their so-called "Citizen's Envirorunental Assessment," a phony, one-sided effort to advance their radical agenda. Past Radical Successes One of the principal organizers of the Glen Canyon Action Network is another Sierra Club director named David Orr. Twenty years ago, Orr went to work for the Sierra Club to end all timber harvesting on public lands in the Pacific Northwest. That measure, too, was called "crazy" and "impossible" in the beginning. Now, 20 years later, public land timber harvests in the Northwest are a thing of the past. DON'T lET EXTREMISTS DRAIN lAKE POWEll!
