Water Year 1996

During water year 1996, releases greater than the minimum
release objective of 10,153 million cubic meters (B,230,tXXl
acre-feet) will only be made if required to equalize the
storage between Lakes Powell and Mead or 10 avoid spills
from Lake Powell. Under the most probable inflow
conditions, releases of 14,378 million cubic meters
(11,655,000 acre-feel) would be made and the reservoir
would lose 492 million cubic meters (399,tXXl acre-feet) of
storage. Under the probable maximum inflow scenario,
approximately 20,00.7 million cubic meters (16,234,tXXl acre.
feet) will be released during the water year and Lake Powell
would gain 703 million cubic meters (570,tXXl acre-feel) of
storage. This maximum probable inflow would require
releases greater than 566.4 cubic meters per second (20,000
cubic feet per second) for a lengthy period of time. It is
estimated that it will take two years of average inflow to
refill Lake Powell.

The interim flow restrictions on the daily and hourly releases
from Glen Canyon Dam implemented in August, 1991, will
continue during water year 1996. A Record of Decision on
the GCDEIS will be completed following the audit specif1ed
in the 1992 Grand Canyon Protection Act. A monitoring
program has been implemented and will continue to measure
the effect of interim flow restrictions on downstream
reSources.

Based on a request from the Transition Work Group of the
GCDElS, one week of high steady flows for research
purposes is planned from Glen Canyon Dam in Marchi April
1996. These flows would test the effectiveness of the Beach
Habitat Building flow recommendation in the GCDEIS and
would require bypassing the powerplanl.

ACTUAL STORAGE 1995

K1JOlI cu.te IIITM8
OD

Of

to

IIIILlJON ACRE.nET
32

..

2"-------.-

.e

.

.

- - --
,;
~ V
1
1

..
...
11
I.
.

.

.

:t ./ # , , .r ~~ ..;. ~ ~" , ,.

14

PROJECTED RELEASES 1996

IIIL.UOfI cuaec IIETIM
3000

ntOUUIlID ACIII......UT

- ,OIl' PH )II WI .
.p lOll 1IIN
.
,
/ \ ,
/ \
/ '""
/ ,
'" 10-" / -....,
......., V 7
.

2700
1.00
2100
1100
110.
1200

...
117
...
7.'
...
.11
7.
..

100

"')./# "'.r~./ ~+ ~" '"

PROJECTED UNREGULATED INFLOW 1l1l1e

MlUJON CUINC 1IEftA8
....
7000
....
1000
-

THOUUND ACR&-f=DT
....
&170
....

P lOB IlIN - 108' PH III PI 08 <AX
/ \
, \
3
/ /
'/ \ \ ,
V.
