These same features scpar.:tte .'1rcas vlithin the rr(Jj(~ct. <br /> <br />The Grand Hogback is a steC'p, nearly vertical, rocky ridge th;1t runs <br /> <br />through the southern po'vtion of the project, separating portions of <br /> <br />the project service areas. Surrounding the project lands arc low <br /> <br />hills and mountains forming escarpments of 100 to 1,000 feei: high <br /> <br />around the main service area, Elevations range from 6,200 fC'ct to <br /> <br />slightly over 7,400 feet in the irrigation service area, with e1e- <br /> <br />vat ions of the surrounding mountains rangin's':Jo over 9,000 feet. <br /> <br />The \vhite River heads in the high White Ri_ver Plateau of the' Southerfl <br /> <br />Rocky Mountains and flows in a westerly direction. As the river <br /> <br />enters the project area, the terrain changes from a narro'. cimyon <br /> <br />to a relatively broad, open valley (14 miles long by 7 miles \Jide) <br /> <br />carved in the softer Manco's shale formation. The l-lhite Rivcer Valley <br /> <br />narrows to a few hundred feet 2 miles \Jest of Meeker where the river <br /> <br />cuts through the Grand Hogback. West of the Hogback the valley again widens <br /> <br />into anoth~r open park or basin. <br /> <br />The Nilk Creek area of the project lies in Axial Basin I-lithin <br /> <br />the Yampa River drainage.
