Flaming Gorge Reservoir
[Green River]

Wotor Yoor 1983

At the beginning of water year 1983, Flaming
Gorge Reservoir .lorad 3,572,000 acre-feet al
water .urlace elevallon 6036 feet. Dueto high
carryover storage and 8cheduled spillway
repair work, higher than normal releases
through the reservoir were scheduled tor
water year 1983.

The water surface was drawn down to
alavatlon 6025 feet prior to tha .prlng runoff.
During the draw down, average dally outflow
from the re.ervolr rarely fell below 2,500 cf..
However, due to rBcord runoff abovB Flaming
Gorge, the re.ervolr filled to elevallon 6040
feet by mldaJune, and contInued to rlS9 almost
.n additional 4 feet Into .urcharge. A.the
Nater surface elevation approached 6040 feet,
. decl.lon was made to place 5-foot high
"elnforcad wooden extensions on the splllwsy
la'e.,o 11m II the flow through tha .plllway,
thereby minimizing damage 10 Ihe yet
unflnl.hed .plllway repair work. 'Maximum
water surface elevation reached 6044 feet with
astorage of 3,g1 1,100 acre-feet. By Ihe end of
the water year, the reservoir w8slowered to
elevallon 6038 feat and .tored 3,676,000
!lere-feet of water.

~unoff above Flaming Gorge Reservoir for the
Nater year was 3,115,000 acre-feet, or 200
lsrcent of the average. MaxImum Inflow Into
'laming Gorge ot 18,350 cf. occurrad on June
1,1983. During the period of peak Inflow,
naxlmum average dally releases from the
e.ervolr ranged from 8,000 10 10,000 cf..
lowevor, another peak Inflow of 15,120 cf.
ccurred on July 5, 1983, which coincided with
16 directed rapid drawdown of Fontenelle
:e.ervolr up.tream. During thl. period a
18xlmum release of 12,000 was sustained for
days, and was then gradually reduced to
.000 cfs over the next few weeks. The
!servolr outflow then remained at or near
000 ct., powerplant capacity, throughoullhe
Imalnder of the water year.
During water year 1984, the reservoir water
surface level at Flaming Gorge Reservoir Is
projected to be drawn down from elevation
6038 'eet 10 aboul elevation 6023 feet before
Ihe .prlng 011984. ihowalor aurlscelevel
will remain high enough under any Inflow
conditions to launch boat' from the rsservolr's
nine ramps. Maximum water surface
elevation 016Q351eol, ..llh. .Iorage 01
3,548,000 acre-feel I. expecled In July.

Due to hIgh carryover storage and 8ctleduled
spillway repair work In 1984, releas8s from
Flaming Gorge Re.ervolr will be higher than
average In water year 1984. Under any Inflow
condition, flow In the river below the dam Is
not expected to exceed 4,000 cf. or tall below
1,000 ct..
