A somewhat larger number of families would
be supported if the area ,.ere devoted more largely to the production of
truck crops. In any event the employment incident to such an area of
irrigated land would involve several hundred people.
As compared to these agricultural benefits, it is probable
that the industrial investi[;ations, When completed, will disclose that
the assessed value of ~1e Pueblo steel plant is of the general magnitude
of 10 to 12 million dollars; that the value of the produotion of the
plant is of a magnitude of 25 to 30 million dollars annually; and that
direct employment involves an average of several thousand people.
In other words the direct and indirect benefits of using and
consuming water incident to the operations of the steel plant at Pueblo
are undoubtedly much greater than the benefits that mi[;ht directly and
indirectly be derived from the use and consumption of the same amount
of ,~ter incident to irrigated agriculture.
Because of the dependence of the irrigationists upon local
markets for their og ricultural products, they mi[;ht we 11 encourage;
rather than oppose, the use of water resources of the Arkansas River

for industrial purposes. In any event the intention of investigations

under way by the Co16rado ~ater Conservation Board is to assemble, and

make available to all interested parties, the f-cts concerning the avail"

able water supplies, and their use and disposal, under all of the various

municipal, agricultural, irrigation, recreational and other benefioial

purposes capable of being served by such -resources.

,

.

(h)
