The present owners use it as a guest house (34). <br /> <br />Jack Slade. <br /> <br />One of the most notorious characters of <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />this area in the 1860's was Joseph "Jack" Slade. He was the <br /> <br /> <br />division superintendent of the Virginia Dale Stage Station. <br /> <br /> <br />~ack had a reputation as a baqman and his life was full of <br /> <br /> <br />wild deeds. Most of his mean exploits occurred while he <br /> <br /> <br />was drinking excessively. <br /> <br /> <br />Once, after warning the ~tation agent and storekeeper <br /> <br /> <br />at Laporte not to sell liquor to the stage drivers, he came <br /> <br /> <br />to teach the agent a lesson. The agent had ignored Jack's <br /> <br /> <br />warning. So Jack came to the station at Laporte and tied <br /> <br /> <br />up the agent. Then he proceeUed to terrorize him, shooting <br /> <br /> <br />up his store and pouring all the molasses, vinegar, flour, <br /> <br /> <br />and sugar on the floor. Late~, Jack returned and paid for <br /> <br /> <br />the damages but once again wa~ned the agent not to ignore <br /> <br /> <br />his wishes. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Later, Slade was dismiss~d by the stage company. His <br />life finally caught up with h1m and he died at the end of <br />a vigilante's rope in Montana in 1864 (17: 7,8). <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Mandeville Farm. Not fa~ from the river Just off Taft <br />Hill Road is the Mandeville Farm. John Mandeville was a <br />Lieutenant in the New York Cavalry and came to Ft. Collins <br />to put down Indian uprisings. He liked Ft. Collins and <br />filed for land after the calvary was discharged. He brought <br />his wife from New York. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br />
