<br />Rio Chama below El Vado Dam, N. Mex.
<br />
<br />Location.--Water-stage recorder, lat 36034148", long 106043124", in Tierra Amarilla Grant, on left
<br />bank 1.5 miles downstream from El Vado Dam, 2.8 miles upstream from Rio Nutrias, and 13 miles
<br />southwest of Tierra Arnarilla. Datum of gage is 6,696.12 ft above mean sea level, datum of 1929.
<br />Prior to October 1935, at site 1.5 miles upstream and October 1935 to September 1938, at site
<br />1.1 miles upstream at different datums.
<br />
<br />Drainaqe area.--877 sq mi of which about 100 sq mi is probably noncontributing.
<br />Averaqe discharge.--4 years (1914, 1921-23), 444 ft3js (32l,700 acre-ft per year) prior to completion
<br />of El Vado Dam; 35 years (1936-70), 372 ft3js (269,500 acre-ft per year), prior to release of
<br />transmountain water; 10 years (1971-80) 403 ft3js (292,000 acre-ft per year).
<br />Extremes.--1914-16, 1920-24, 1936-80: Maximum discharge observed, 9,000 ft3js May 22, 1920 (gage
<br />helght, 12 ft); no flow Mar. 25, 26, 31, 1955.

<br />Remarks.--Records good. Diversions above station for irrigation of about 10,600 acres. Since 1935
<br />flow regulated by El Vado Reservoir and since October 1970 flow partly regulated by Heron Reservoir.
<br />Subsequent to May 1971 flow affected by releases of transmountain water from Heron Reservoir.

<br />Location.--Water-stage recorder, lat 36014'12", long 106024'59", in SE~SE\ sec. 8, T. 23 N., R. 5 E.,
<br />on right bank 0.8 mile downstream from Abiquiu Dam and 5.9 miles northwest of Abiquiu. Altitude
<br />of gage is 6,040 ft (from river-profile map and topographic map).

<br />Drainaqe area.--2,147 sq mi of which about 100 sq mi is probably noncontributing.
<br />Averaqe discharqe.--9 years (1962-70), 376 ft3js (272,400 acre-feet per year), prior to release of
<br />transmountain water; 10 years (1971-80), 459 ft3js (332,500 acre-ft per year).
<br />Extremes.--1961-80: Maximum discharge, 2,990 ft3js July 1, 1965 (gage height, 6.69 ft); minimum,
<br />about 0.5 ft3js Mar. 17, 1966.

<br />Remarks.--Records good except those for winter months, which ace fair. Flow regulated by Heron,
<br />El Vado, and Abiquiu Reservoirs. Diversions above station for ireigation of about 17,000 acres.
