c:!36Jv@(jJ

Q

In order to have safe and pure drinking water, lhe local water supply must go
through several steps in a treatment process, First is AERATION In which
water is sprayed into the air to release any trapped gases and absorb
additional oxygen for belter taste, To remove any possible dirt in the water,
three more steps are necessary. COAGULATION, SEDl MENTATION and
FIL TAATION. Alum, or aluminum sulfate, is added to the water which breaks
down into tiny. sticky particles called "f1oc", The dirt then coagulates with
the floc and begins to settle to the ballam as the particles become heavier,
ALUM
tC

4"COII.6ULATlON

,1'(1
.
"

l:J (;7.()
t:) 0 rJ

'0

Q

~

RESERVOIR.

~AERATlON

/:'" E F~f':~',:T' i ()l\l

Place a lid on lop 01 one of the Jars and shake it for
10 seconds, Next pour the water back and forth
into another container, How does this action allow
the trapped gases to escape and new oxygen to be
added to the water?

Dissolve 10 alum crystals in 1 tablespoon of warm
water in a cup, Grind the crystals while mixing
them into solution, Pour the contents of the cup
into the jar of aerated water, rinse the cup and add
this water 10 the jar, Slowly stir lor fjve minutes
and observe the formation of "floc", How rapidly
did the floc begin to form?

Ib
