The R.C.&D. programa of the Agriculture De-
partment are oriented primarily toward the problems of the
agricultural sector; however, they do consider all problems that
are approved for study by a Soil Conservation District. The
shortage of water is a major problem in ASA 1102 and the agri-
cultural on-going studies do stress the conservation of water,
but the programs are limited in scope. Resolution of water and
related land problems must be by a st~dy such as the proposed
USDA Cooperative River Basin Study by the Agricultural Department
which will weigh all issues basin-wide in problem solutions.

I
I

I

I

Summary effects:

The agricultural and related manufacturing industry in ASA
1102 will be increased by about $79,691,000 annually by provid-
ing the supplemental supply of water needed to satisfy the water
requirements for irrigation. Provision of good quality of water
for domestic uses .will eliminate the estimated annual cost of
$1,560,000 for home water softeners and purifiers. Improvement
in the quality of the irrigation uses will increase crop produc-
tion to some unknown degree, and eliminate the problem of pre-
venting the soils from becoming barren by the accumulation of
salts. There are an estimated 1,327,000 activity days of recrea-
tion foregone annually if programs are not developed to alleviate
the problems.

I

I

I

I

LOUISIANA

I

No other areas in need of major planning studies were
identified.

I

119

I
