The remaining laterals needing improvement consist of about

238 miles.!./ and have an ,est imated one-t ime improvement cost of

$13,700,000. It is estimated that improvements will be installed on about

80 percent of the eligible laterals, or some 190 miles. Total installation

cost is estimated to be $10,900,000.

Water entering the groundwater supply from irrigatien practices ameunts te

about 150,000 acre-feet annually, with contributions of approximately 50,000

acre-feet each from canal seepage, lateral seepage and onfarm seepage and

deep percolation.!/ It is estimated that 40 percent of the total

off-farm laterals require improvements to support the onfarm system

improvement measures for salinity centrol. Therefere, it is estimated that

proposed lateral improvements will reduce seepage by 20,000 acre-feet

annually, resulting in a salt load reduction of 100,000 tons per year.

_~/ Table A-l, page A-4, Environmental Assessment, Grand Valley Unit,
December 1977, USBR and SCS.

!/ Page B-10, Environmental Assessment, Grand Valley Unit, December 1977,
USBR and SCS.

Revised November 1979

59a
